Entretanto Project

The Entretanto Project was launched in September 2025 to create spaces for debate, learning, and discussion among the organizations that make up our Network. In a local and global context in which polarization is undermining constructive dialogue and making it increasingly difficult to find common ground, Entretanto serves as a tool to strengthen the work of Brazilian civil society organizations. It reinforces the importance of democratic culture in advancing rights, building partnerships, and improving communication with their audiences.

One of the project’s initiatives is Entretanto Magazine, a publication conceived as a space for in-depth analysis of contemporary challenges facing democracy and as part of a broader strategy to strengthen democratic culture in Brazil and around the world. Created in a context marked by growing political polarization, disinformation, and violence in public debate, the magazine seeks to create a countercurrent that broadens the circulation of critical perspectives and promotes the collective development of solutions to today’s democratic challenges.

The magazine brings together internationally recognized academics, researchers, and experts to discuss key issues related to democracy, governance, civic participation, and pluralistic coexistence. More than offering diagnoses, the project aims to foster dialogue among civil society, academia, and international actors, reinforcing practices of collaboration, civic participation, and institutional strengthening.

Democracy, Pluralism, and Knowledge Production

The first edition of Entretanto features analyses by internationally recognized scholars of democracy and political transformation, including Angela Alonso, Marta Lagos, Larry Diamond, and Olufunto Akinduro.

The idea of bringing together diverse perspectives on democracies around the world emerged from the understanding that producing and circulating reliable knowledge about democracy is essential to confronting the rise of authoritarianism. The articles address topics such as democratic culture, public opinion, electoral integrity, institutional strengthening, and the effects of polarization on contemporary democracies.

Democratic Culture as a Strategic Pillar

The magazine also seeks to strengthen civil society organizations by emphasizing the importance of democratic culture in advancing rights and improving communication with different audiences. In this regard, the publication serves as a strategic tool for understanding challenges such as disinformation, hate speech, and political violence.

By connecting experts, civil society leaders, and international organizations, Entretanto aims to establish a permanent platform for reflection and public advocacy, supporting initiatives committed to defending freedoms, fundamental rights, and democracy in Brazil and other regions of the world.
