This Wednesday (February 11), Pacto pela Democracia launches Entretanto magazine. Conceived as a space for critical reflection, analysis, and dialogue on the contemporary challenges facing democracy in Brazil and around the world, the publication brings together contributions from researchers and civil society leaders to examine authoritarian risks, strengthen democratic culture, and foster collective solutions aimed at institutional improvement, civic participation, and the consolidation of the democratic rule of law.

The decision to launch Entretanto arose from the need to produce and disseminate high-quality, accessible, and strategically focused knowledge to address democratic erosion, deepen analysis, promote democratic coexistence, and support the sustainable work of civil society in a context marked by institutional crises, political polarization, and global challenges to contemporary democracies.

In Entretanto, readers will find interviews with leading Brazilian and international experts on democracy; reflections on civil society, electoral processes, inequality, and crises of representation; and accessible, informative content on democratic life. The publication seeks to foster dialogue and the collective development of paths toward strengthening democratic institutions and culture.

In this edition of Entretanto, Larry Diamond examines the vulnerabilities of contemporary democracies, with a particular focus on the United States. He discusses how disinformation, polarization, and the erosion of trust in electoral processes affect institutional pillars and identifies possible paths toward rebuilding them. Ângela Alonso analyzes the trajectory of Brazilian civil society since the 1988 Constitution, reflecting on the current dilemmas facing democracy, political fragmentation, and the crisis of representation.

Marta Lagos, in turn, offers a Latin American public opinion perspective, showing how structural inequalities erode trust in institutions and hinder democratic progress across the region. Olufunto Akinduro approaches democracy through the lens of electoral integrity, highlighting the importance of public trust, the challenges faced by different African countries, and the global lessons these contexts offer for strengthening civic space.
